Contacting Peers

Write to all peers at the House of Lords, London SW1A 0PW. The salutation is 'My Lord,' or 'My Lady', except that Bishops are 'My Lord Bishop', and Archbishops and Dukes are 'Your Grace'. Letters end 'Yours faithfully.' The House of Lords switchboard number is 020 7219 3000.

Stages of a Bill

These are the stages of a Parliamentary Bill in each House:

  • First Reading: Bill is printed but not voted on.
  • Second Reading: Debate and vote on principle of the Bill.
  • Committee: Amendments are debated and voted on in a Standing Committee of MPs.
  • Report: More amendments are considered by the whole House.
  • Third Reading: Final debate and vote on the whole Bill as it stands after amendment.
